Statement on Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and Filming in Occupied Western Sahara
We, the undersigned, express deep concern about the filming of The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan and featuring actors Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Elliot Page, among many others, in the occupied territory of Western Sahara—specifically in the city of Dakhla (historically known as Villa Cisneros).
Filming a high-profile Hollywood production in occupied Dakhla and referring to the location as part of Morocco constitutes a dangerous act of cultural erasure and violates international law. It normalizes an occupation that has led to displacement, human rights abuses, and political repression for nearly 50 years.
We call on:

Christopher Nolan and the production team of The Odyssey to immediately suspend all filming in occupied Western Sahara and cease use of all materials already filmed there until proper consultations can be held with the legitimate representatives of the Sahrawi people.

The production team to correct all public references to the filming location to reflect international law—using “Dakhla, Western Sahara” or “Villa Cisneros, Western Sahara,” not “Morocco.”

All actors associated with the production—including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Corey Hawkins, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, and Elliot Page—to issue public statements acknowledging the ongoing occupation and apologizing to the Sahrawi people for their unintentional complicity in whitewashing Morocco’s occupation.
We stand in solidarity with the Sahrawi people and urge the entertainment industry to uphold the same values of justice, dignity, and truth that it so often claims to promote.
Background
Western Sahara remains the last colony in Africa and has been subjected to a brutally repressive occupation by the Kingdom of Morocco since 1975, despite the International Court of Justice determining that the Sahrawi people have the right to self-determination that same year. The Sahrawi people, represented by the Polisario Front and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), continue to seek their internationally recognized right to self-determination.

أن يقوم كريستوفر نولان وفريق إنتاج فيلم "الأوديسة" بتعليق جميع أعمال التصوير فورًا في الصحراء الغربية المحتلة، والتوقف عن استخدام جميع المواد المصورة هناك إلى أن يتم التشاور بالشكل المناسب مع الممثلين الشرعيين للشعب الصحراوي.
أن يقوم فريق الإنتاج بتصحيح جميع الإشارات العامة إلى موقع التصوير بما يتماشى مع القانون الدولي، باستخدام "الداخلة، الصحراء الغربية" أو "فيلا سيسنيروس، الصحراء الغربية"، وليس "المغرب".
أن يُصدر جميع الممثلين المشاركين في العمل – بمن فيهم مات ديمون، توم هولاند، زندايا، آن هاثاواي، كوري هوكينز، لوبيتا نيونغو، تشارليز ثيرون، روبرت باتينسون، وإليوت بيج – بيانات علنية يعترفون فيها بالاحتلال المستمر، و يعتذرون للشعب الصحراوي عن تواطئهم غير المقصود في تبييض صورة الاحتلال المغربي.
نحن نقف متضامنين مع الشعب الصحراوي، ونحثّ صناعة الترفيه على التمسك بالقيم نفسها من العدالة والكرامة والحقيقة التي تدّعي كثيرًا الدفاع عنها.
