Michael Beer has been Director of Nonviolence International since 1998. He has trained activists in many countries, including Myanmar, Kosovo, Tibet, Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, India, Zimbabwe, and the United States. He is a frequent public speaker on nonviolence and has been broadcast on CSPAN, CNN, and other major media outlets.
He is the author of a new book on Nonviolent Tactics. This book belongs on the virtual bookshelf of anyone who is studying or practicing nonviolent action. This book updates Gene Sharp’s 1973 seminal work Methods of Nonviolent Action, reworking Sharp’s classifications to include 148 additional tactics. Brief yet comprehensive, this overview of nonviolence explains the mechanisms by which nonviolent actions succeed.

Mubarak Awad is the founder of Nonviolence International, an organization aimed at promoting peace education and nonviolent action in dealing with political and social issues. NVI has multiple branches in the United States and overseas and has worked with various movements and organizations across the globe. Mr. Awad has also been an adjunct professor at the American University in Washington, DC since 1989 at the School of International Studies. He focuses on promoting peace dialogue and transforming post-conflict societies, as well as teaching graduate courses on the methods and theory of nonviolence.

He is co-founder and board member of the Just Peace Advocates. He was the head of the Legal Committee negotiating the Cairo Agreement of 1994 between Israel and the PLO.

Rafif Jouejati is a board member of Nonviolence International and a Non-Resident Scholar at the Middle East Institute. She is the co-founder and director of the Foundation to Restore Equality and Education in Syria (FREE Syria), and the principal architect of the Syrian Freedom Charter project, which surveyed more than 50,000 Syrians on democratic aspirations and political transition. She is also a founding member of the Syrian Women’s Political Network, a member of the Board of Directors of The Day After, and President of the Board of Directors of Baytna.
